Last year we saw unprecedented levels of business recruiting, and this is set to continue into 2023. The pandemic was a catalyst for people retiring early, which has led to an unprecedented skills shortage across the industry, further impacting recruitment.

Whilst macroeconomic factors are a concern, industry-specific challenges are where competition for talent can become fierce. 33% of employers said that they have a skills shortage within their current teams. 27% said they didn’t feel that their organisation has the talent it needs to succeed in the coming year and beyond.

The number of respondents from different age groups overall was telling. Only 2% classed themselves as ‘Baby Boomers’, a huge 58% said they were ‘Generation X’, 34% were ‘Generation Y’ and only 6% were ‘Generation Z’. This suggests an ever-widening skills gap, with a consistent number of candidates retiring annually, but low numbers entering the industry.
